USA 2010: California Events Highlights
The state of California is the third largest and most populous state in the United States with a population of more than 35 million people. Situated on the west coast, it has been a very popular tourist destination for US residents and overseas visitors for many years. Each year holidaymakers flock to California to take advantage of its beautiful landscapes and exciting cities. As well as stunning beaches, delicious wines of the Napa Valley and iconic cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles, California is host to a number of events and festivals in 2010 to make your holiday a little bit more interesting.
To start the year off, the San Diego Whale Festival takes place between 1 and 31 January. Throughout the month whale days celebrate the migration of thousands of California Grey Whales with a number of different offers and festivities.
From 5 to 18 January, the Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival takes place in California. 2010 is the 21st year of this prestigious film festival. Screenings of more than 175 films from 60 countries are held on 15 screens throughout Palm Springs, as well as special events and gala receptions.
March is the perfect time for art lovers to visit the sunshine state with the La Quinta Arts Festival opening its doors from 11 to 14 March. Now in its 28th year, more than 200 of the top contemporary US artists showcase a wide variety of art, including sculpture, painting, fine craft, photography, jewellery, mixed media and textile. Set against the backdrop of the Santa Rose Mountains, this is one of the country's top arts festivals.
2010 is a special year for the annual San Francisco Pride Celebration and Parade as it is its 40th anniversary. The theme this year will be 'forty and fabulous'. This famous parade features more than 200 groups, 300 exhibitors and 20 stages and venues and is the largest gathering of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and allies in the USA. A bright and vibrant event, it really is a must see if you are in the city during 26 and 27 June.
For fans of music and in particular Elvis, 2010 sees the celebration of this famous rock icon's 75th birthday. California held a special place in Elvis' heart and he honeymooned here and often stayed in Palm Springs. In fact, on 8 and 9 January, celebrations are being held at his honeymoon home in Palm Springs, including tours of the house and special guests and artists who will perform during the two day celebration.
